Summary:

A colored image of the SID team, as they take their farewell of the viewer. It was posted for the Guardian drama finale in 2018. The title of the piece is 曲终人不散, which translates to "the end of the song is not scattered" - a cultural reference that this source translates as We don't leave even when our show is over.

Why I'm Reccing This:

Because it makes the perfect piece on which to end my month of fanart recs. ♥ And because team! Because the message of the artwork is basically "the story will keep on going", and look at all the artists and writers and other creators making that true. This was a farewell posted almost two years ago, but even as some part ways other join up and fall in love with Shen Wei, Zhao Yunlan, and the rest of the SID team here.

Summary: Zhao Yunlan is stuck in a time loop. Shen Wei is stuck on the outside.

Why I'm Reccing This: This is my self-rec! I was inspired by January's [community profile] brush_and_lantern theme of Renew, Reverse, Reboot which really suggested time loops to me. It's a trope I love and have written before, but I wanted to see if I could write a successful time loop fic from the POV of the person not in the loop, so it jumps in very late in the game when Zhao Yunlan is already worn down and completely done with being trapped like this. It required a lot more forward planning than I usually do for a story (I'm a "write it and see where it goes" author generally) and I'm really proud of the result.

Type: Fanvid
Category: M/M
Length/Size: 4:05 minutes
Characters/Ships: Shěn Wēi/Zhào Yúnlán
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Themes: Battle husbands, hurt/comfort, some drama-canon violence, SID teamwork
Summary: Nothing worth having comes without some kind of fight.

Why I'm Reccing This: LOVERS IN A DANGEROUS TIME is a beautiful portrayal of a relationship surrounded by outside threats - see title/song choice - but what I really like is that the vid doesn't dwell on the dangers and the losses, and instead focuses on the fighting (and fighting back), working in tandem, looking out for/supporting each other, worrying and sheltering and having faith in one another as they prepare to face the challenges together. It's full of hope and determination, and truly emphasizes the "lovers" part of the story. Also, the editing really brings out the drama's delightful depiction of Weilan as the battle couple and the delicious tension that dangerous situations bring into their chemistry (bomb scene, anyone?).

The song used here is a great choice: BNL's cover adds tempo and playfulness to the original, which matches the tone of the vid. I love how [personal profile] soupytwist picks out the way that Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan click physically, both on their own and with each other; they are in sync so much of the time, and their body language responds to, echoes, or mirrors each other's so often, that their movements feel like an intricate dance. This vid is an amazing celebration of it, from fight scenes to their matching strides as they walk together.

Themes: fix-it, post-canon, found family

Summary: Life as the flame of the Guardian Lantern is both exactly and not at all what Zhao Yunlan had expected.

Why I'm Reccing This: I wasn't really "in fandom" when I finished watching the drama the first time, in that none of my really close fandom friends had seen it yet, and the people through whom I'd found it weren't in my time zone/available to hold me. Alone (and uglycrying) I sent out a cry into the void for post-canon, fix-it stories that could take all the feelings I was having and resolve them into something I could live with. Someone kindly stumbled across my plea and linked me to this one, for which I am forever grateful, because it was the first Guardian fanfic I ever read and set the groundwork for me to remember that the story will keep on going is such an important concept that it's repeated over and over and over in the theme song <3 The summary gives you the gist of the plot, though to say much else would be too spoilery. Suffice to say Zhao Yunlan isn't the kind of person to just sit idly by forever, and do nothing at all. All the characters are beautifully drawn, the premise slots easily into the space left behind by canon, and there's a little sadness, a little comedy, and a whole lot of affection and resolution for aching hearts. New fans coming into this recs comm searching for just that? - start here. Older fans feeling a little down? - revisit as needed.

Characters/Ships: Zhao Yunlan, Shen Wei, Da Qing, Zhu Hong, Chu Shuzhi, Guo Changcheng

Themes: Humor, Established Relationship, Domestic Fluff

Summary: Zhao Yunlan has seen all sorts of marriages in his line of work. Mainly dead and/or weird ones, but there have been some positive exceptions too. He’s even learned a thing or two from most of them. Even—especially the bad ones.

Why I'm Reccing This: I was already chuckling at the tag "Zhao Yunlan Shares His Wisdom to an Unappreciative Audience" and I continued to chuckle all the way through this short afternoon peek at how a happily married Zhao Yunlan torments the rest of his SID family. Everyone is delightfully in character and witty as well. If you're looking for a quick, fluffy, entertaining interlude, this checks all the boxes. Two thumbs up.

Summary: A Guardian AU inspired in part by The Scarlet Pimpernel.

Why I'm Reccing This: The creators bring this universe to life using a mishmash of political intrigue and characters that I personally find stay true to their canon values. Somehow, this series also expands on some of the loose ends of the drama, despite being set a universe away from it. The way the tensions between Dixing, Haixing and Yashou are explained, the injustice experienced by Dixingren under Zhao Xinci's thumb is reminiscent of their canon treatment. The unexplored politics of Guardian is something that has always appealed to me, and this story has that in spades.

Rating: Teen and Up
Warnings: None
Themes: H/C, Post-canon fixit, AU: Everyone Lives, Angst, Magical Exhaustion, Caretaking, Dixing Politics
Summary:

In western lands beneath the sun
the flowers may rise in Spring,
the trees may bud, the waters run,
the merry finches sing.
Or there maybe 'tis cloudless night
and swaying beeches bear
the Elven-stars as jewels white
amid their branching hair.

Though here at journey's end I lie
in darkness buried deep,
beyond all towers strong and high,
beyond all mountains steep,
above all shadows rides the sun
and stars forever dwell:
I will not say the day is done,
nor bid the stars farewell.

- JRR Tolkien (Sam's Song)

Why I'm Reccing This: This series is an amazing fix-it that takes an original, unusual approach that's one of those "oh, of course" things when you read it. Post-canon, Shen Wei suffers from worsening magical exhaustion with no explanation, while the Regent plots against him and Ye Zun's former followers stir up trouble. Because it's frith, there is intense, visceral hurt, vivid and detailed world-building, gorgeous characterization, and lovely writing. One of the best things about this series is the intensity and steadiness of the love that informs Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan's relationship, even as it's in flux, even those times when they're frustrated with each other or their own limitations. I also really love how much this series is about giving Zhao Yunlan a chance to caretake and comfort Shen Wei, which is kinda my kryptonite. Also, there is house-shopping.
