Why I'm Reccing This: Thanks to the rec inmarycrawford's journal, I have gone down the rabbit hole of Chinese mashup vids of Bai Yu/Zhu Yilong character combinations. Although there are several that I really like, this one remains at the top, so I'm reccing it here. It is a master class in constructed reality, combining footage from Bai Yu's drama Memory Lost with Zhu Yilong from (mostly) Granting You a Dreamlike Life (+ other sources, including one amazingly well-chosen iconic Shen Wei shot) for a fast-paced, sexy narrative of cop vs. criminal/cat-and-mouse. The use of source dialogue (there are English subtitles in the YouTube version) doesn't clash with the music, and when the music comes to the fore, the lyrics work with the story & visuals, setting up the sexiness: these guys are juicily obsessing over each other. The vidder did a great job processing the footage to look cinematic--if stylized--which is no small feat with something as cheap-looking as Dreamlike Life with its flat lighting. The editing is tight and the choice of clips just blows me away. The vidder took one of the most insipid scenes from Dreamlike Life and recontextualized it to look so sinister I flail every time I watch it. This is just a hot, sexy joy to watch.
