Characters/Ships: Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan

Summary: “Schedule new meeting…oh.” He clicks on the button and is instantly bombarded with an options menu. Title, description, start time, duration—he remembers this part, Shen Wei thinks, he can do this.

Ten minutes later, staring uncomprehendingly at his reflection in a black screen when his laptop dies just after he finishes setting up and pressing “start” because he’d forgotten to charge it last night, Shen Wei realizes that He Cannot Do This.

(For pandemic reasons, Dragon City University temporarily moves their classes online. Shen Wei suffers. A lot.)

Why I'm Reccing This: Shen Wei tries very hard and battles technology and online teaching in this fic, to the extreme delight of his students. This fic is laugh-out-loud funny but not overdone -- it remains in character throughout, and all of Shen Wei's myriad computer woes are perfect. Zhao Yunlan is very patient and good at fixing computer problems, and Da Qing is... himself.

Summary:
Zhao Yunlan is twenty-eight and single and has everything he needs. Doesn’t he?

Why I'm Reccing This:
[personal profile] amara1783 does the sweetest, loveliest reading of this character piece. The emotions Zhao Yunlan keeps bottled up are right there under the surface, all fond annoyance at Da Qing's feline concern. I love how Da Qing starts out teasing and bubbly and then goes sleepy and almost melancholic. And the change in Zhao Yunlan's voice from flippant to somber is so striking. It really drives home the loneliness Zhao Yunlan is trying so hard to hide from. Because even thought Shen Wei isn't in this, it really is all about how Zhao Yunlan's life has a big Shen Wei-shaped hole in it.

Summary:

Shen Wei stumbles across a lantern in the library that is always lit, sitting wholly out of place next to a window that allows in neverending Dixing light.

-

“Shen Wei…” the lantern says, and for a moment, his tone sounds fond, almost longing. Then the lantern continues in a jovial tone, “That is a good name.”

For some reason, Shen Wei starts at that, feels an odd jolt of deja vu.

Why I'm Reccing This: I haven't been reading as much fanfic as usual because I've been having trouble focusing (I'm sure many of you can relate). So when I pulled this one off my To Be Read list yesterday, I didn't know if I'd be able to get into it, especially with the direct, matter-of-fact style of the first chapter.

Boy, was I wrong. I was completely sucked in by the story, spending most of the rest of the day reading it and finishing it this morning.

Folks, this is THE fix it you want. It is, and I don't say this lightly, a masterpiece. Completely canon-compliant, taking place many years after the ending, yet it still manages not to lose the things that we so love the show for. Every question is answered (except one, which is clearly a 'man was not meant to know' question), every concern is addressed, and the triumph of human and Dixing ingenuity is completely plausible within the context of everything we know about the world. There are many hidden knives to stumble on along the way, lots of moments of pain and sorrow and horror and tears, but nothing that can't, in the end, be overcome by cleverness, determination, and love. The spareness of the language becomes poetry as more and more of the world is revealed.

The positivity, joy, and absolutely lovely descriptions and reunions throughout are exactly what I needed right now. They might be what you needed, too.

Why I'm Reccing This: This is such a lovely, comforting, poignant story. It's a character study of Zhao Yunlan the day before the start of the series, and every time I read it I'm struck by how spot-on Zhao Yunlan's characterisation is, how well and with what a light touch the friendship between Da Qing and Zhao Yunlan is portrayed, and how there's a subtle melancholy longing interwoven in the telling. Reading this with the knowledge of what happens the next day, all the boundless possibilities of that meeting, is so hopeful.

Summary: Zhao Yunlan watches over injured Shen Wei.

Why I'm Reccing This: zvaize made two works of fanart for the Sundial Exchange, and I love both. They're very different in style - the other one is In Your Arms, a beautiful embrace in soft colour - but the sheer dramatic impact of "Long Night" makes it my favorite.

There is a STORY here - Shen Wei is hurt and feverish (and beautiful, because of course), Zhao Yunlan is fierce and tender and protective, guarding his sleep, and Da Qing is right there in the middle, extending his own paw for safety and protection.

But that's the story, and this is art - and it's gorgeously drawn, the strong use of black/white contrast feels right for this dramatic moment, and the way we see everything in a slanted top-down perspective makes it all the more intimate - we are seeing them from some hidden window, maybe, but this is a very private moment. I love the contrast between Zhao Yunlan's relaxed right hand and the gripping tension in his left, and the way feverish Shen Wei is turned toward him, sheltered under the wing of that tense arm. SIGH. So good!

Summary: Set during episode 7. After a long shift Guo Changcheng bumps into Chu Shuzhi. Literally.

Why I'm Reccing This: I love lighthearted slice of life/team downtime stories, and this one delivers tons of comedy and insight. Chu Shuzhi's POV is a brilliant choice for presenting an introduction to Dungeons and Dragons, which starts sort of accidentally with Guo Changcheng and then involves others at the SID until it becomes a group activity. Amara's characterization is spot-on as the non-human team members offer a range of reactions to the idea of a game about fighting monsters - all the more hilarious since they literally fight monsters on a daily basis. And everybody is delightful!

The fic is gen with very gently implied relationships. Lao Chu's perspective provides insight into his changing impression of Xiao Guo; it's not my ship, but the touch of tenderness and respect in his thoughts feels very true to canon with room for further interpretation, if one were so inclined. Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei's chemistry is depicted in a perfect nutshell, and again, feeling very canonical. Come for the comedy, stay for the team feels!

Collection: Yuletide 2019
Summary: The first time Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei met was while they were both petting Da Qing, so it was only reasonable that Da Qing got invested into their relationship right from the start. Also, Shen Wei’s first words to Zhao Yunlan were “This is a very intelligent cat,” which was the best and most appropriate come-hither line anyone ever used on anyone about anything, end of discussion. Da Qing just prayed that Zhao Yunlan wouldn’t fuck this up.

Why I'm Reccing This: To describe this fic seems simple: it's episodes 1-13 rewritten from Da Qing's point of view. But that feels like a vast understatement. It's Da Qing brought to life in a way that feels canonical and true, the unfolding of events at SID and around Zhao Yunlan, Shen Wei and Da Qing through a cat's-eye view. Da Qing's voice is perfect - I would suspect the author were also a cat, if I thought cats cared about writing for Yuletide at all. Being a cat, thinking like a cat, seeing like a cat is woven so intricately into this story that by the time you get to the end you can't remember why anyone would ever want to be a mere human in the first place.

Summary: The one where Shen Wei is a Chinese opera performer and Zhao Yunlan is a smitten factory worker from the countryside.

Why I'm Reccing This: I've read The Singer almost two months ago (the series completed posting in mid-October) yet I keep thinking back on it almost daily. The language is deceptively simple and as powerful as poetry: it does an amazing job of building the world of this AU and creating a vivid and unforgettable sense of place. The style reminds me of God's Own Country - another tale of an isolating, wide open yet emotionally claustrophobic environment where life seems to consist of nothing but hard work, tough choices, and limitations - except both stories also end up blooming into joy thanks to the characters' discovery of love. For all the harshness of the rural living conditions described so deftly and matter-of-factly in The Singer, there is an underlying weave of kindness, warmth, and hope that truly moved me. The plot develops in small, tentative steps, quietly and gently and without blowouts, but many of those quiet steps are profoundly captivating - as Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan learn to trust each other, and as they navigate relationships with family and friends within their dense communities.

The rhythm of [archiveofourown.org profile] mabyn's language and the richness of her storytelling, both in and between the lines, are truly wonderful and bring to life some stunning visuals (with long-haired Shen Wei at its center, as is only right for a tale told from Zhao Yunlan's perspective). From the very beginning, I fell in love with the goodwill battling the bitterness in Zhao Yunlan's voice, his resolve to appreciate what he has, his awareness that there's so much still missing from his life, and his willingness to fight for it (both in work and in love). My heart hurt over the unspoken but clearly coded past pain made evident in Shen Wei's caution as they embark on an intimate relationship. Zhao Yunlan is sweetly open-hearted and somewhat naive, even as he see-saws through the emotional experience of realizing he's in love with a man. The way they navigate their attraction to each other, and can't help being honest and vulnerable because they're drawn to one another, is intoxicating. Through it all, there is an almost overwhelming presence of community which provides support and structure, but also binds them into social expectations and decisions made out of need rather than want.

This is a love story, but also a story of (re)creating family and community through gradual change, of healing old hurts, finding/offering forgiveness and grace, and welcoming joy. It's a quiet, understated, gorgeous tapestry about finding a path toward celebrating life and making it better on a very realistic scale. At its emotional core, this AU very much matches the drama itself.

Collection: 80 Failed Microcosms (Guardian)

Summary: If Yunlan is going to learn how to make actual food that requires more effort than just boiling water and putting hot water into stuff, he’s going to have to take all the notes.

“Right,” he says to himself. “How hard can it be?”

He watches all twenty-two minutes and fourteen seconds of Chef Shen's video without fast-forwarding. When it comes to an end, he clicks on the replay button.

He ends up taking zero notes, and the only thing he manages to learn from the whole exercise is that Chef Shen -Shen Wei- is really fucking beautiful when he smiles.

Why I'm Reccing This: A new Guardian fan (ok it was [personal profile] elynross) recently said, and I quote: I'm finding that I really adore the AU versions of this universe, the "SW is a bartender/chef/son of a Dixing warlord," probably because it's an opportunity to explore and relish the characters without the inherent hurt and tragedy. I tend to agree with this and therefore beg members of this community to forgive me for always bringing the romantic tropey fluff stories for you to peruse. It's just who I am now.

One of sarahyyy's defining strengths as an author is their ability to write modern meet-cutes that always have a touch of both humor and poignancy to them, but are also exceptional at showcasing the real attractions and deeper connections that somehow pull two very different people toward each other. In other words, a subtle masterclass on How Can These Idiots Finally Get Together 101. In this AU both Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei are social media celebrities whose paths inadvertently cross online, to the delight of their fans (and Zhao Yunlan) leading to - let's just say shenanigans at the individual, support team, and meddling-family levels. If Zhao Yunlan had a character theme it would be "thirsty for Shen Wei" and how sarahyyy maneuvers him through that particular dilemma in this alternate-universe life is a delightful ride from start to finish, with smile-inducing easter eggs from the canon universe scattered throughout for just the right feeling of oh yes, it's all of you people, again.

Summary:

In western lands beneath the sun
the flowers may rise in Spring,
the trees may bud, the waters run,
the merry finches sing.
Or there maybe 'tis cloudless night
and swaying beeches bear
the Elven-stars as jewels white
amid their branching hair.

Though here at journey's end I lie
in darkness buried deep,
beyond all towers strong and high,
beyond all mountains steep,
above all shadows rides the sun
and stars forever dwell:
I will not say the day is done,
nor bid the stars farewell.

- JRR Tolkien (Sam's Song)

Why I'm Reccing This: This series is an amazing fix-it that takes an original, unusual approach that's one of those "oh, of course" things when you read it. Post-canon, Shen Wei suffers from worsening magical exhaustion with no explanation, while the Regent plots against him and Ye Zun's former followers stir up trouble. Because it's frith, there is intense, visceral hurt, vivid and detailed world-building, gorgeous characterization, and lovely writing. One of the best things about this series is the intensity and steadiness of the love that informs Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan's relationship, even as it's in flux, even those times when they're frustrated with each other or their own limitations. I also really love how much this series is about giving Zhao Yunlan a chance to caretake and comfort Shen Wei, which is kinda my kryptonite. Also, there is house-shopping.
