The guitar next to them and scattered slippers speak of a place where they're both happy and comfortable and I just feel a lot of love when I look at this.

This fic starts with a non-con kiss and through lots and lots of angst eventually leads to a happy ending.

Why I'm Reccing This: This is a wonderfully written and sympathetically observed story from Bai Yu's POV where Bai Yu and Zhu Yilong get together while filming Guardian. Bai Yu's impulsive personality runs up against Zhu Yilong's rigid control, and Bai Yu devotes himself to making things right between them. But this is not a typical misunderstandings story, which is why it appeals to me so much. (Plus I have a weakness for stories about dreams.) It's got layers, and is more about what Bai Yu does and doesn't realize about himself as much as it is about the attraction between them. The final chapter is sweet and sincere, and the Zhu Yilong in it is excellent: an active party in the relationship, making it a two-way street, and not merely an object of desire. This is not a new story--in fact, it could qualify for the next Wayback Wednesday (April 29)--but it's so good it's worth a re-read or, for ZhuBai newcomers, it's a delightful treat all ready and waiting for you.

The Dragon is nicely dragon-like, and the ending is superb. I love the physical details that evoke the fantasy setting and the power and beauty of the Dragon. Most of all, I love them discovering each other for the first time. This story from January 2019 is my rec for Wayback Wednesday.

It's a good thing Long-ge is holding him up against the hard surface with his body.

Why I'm Reccing This: Bai Yu's characterization here is sincere, fun, flexible, and his understanding of Zhu Yilong is full of affection and tenderness. The details are wonderfully observed, from the physical descriptions to all the mentions and hints of the ways they thoroughly explored their Guardian characters' relationship off set. The sex is smoking hot. I'm not into D/s generally, but the "mild" in the tag is appropriate here, and the sex is full of feelings. The part that especially grabbed my heart is this:
He's tired of being looked at, Bai Yu thinks and mentally kicks himself for not noticing sooner [...] which leads to the blindfold mentioned in the tags -- which is so wonderfully sweet and makes me flail. Sweet and hot. I love it.

Why I'm Reccing This: One of my favorite tropes in RPF is how Zhu Yilong is simultaneously an excellent actor AND ALSO terrible at fooling himself and/or anyone close to him where Bai Yu is concerned. The plot is simple: exactly as it says in the summary. But what makes this fic memorable is the methods and lengths to which Zhu Yilong will twist himself to be able to go on a date with Bai Yu without having to suffer through the sheer and absolute terror of the simplest approach: just asking Bai Yu on a date. Anyone who has ever watched footage of Zhu Yilong managing to get lost in the middle of a stage even with people motioning for him which direction he should move in, can envision the Zhu Yilong in this story perfectly: sweet, earnest, and needing so much help to get out of his own way. His growing desperation is both touching and entertaining, but still the author treats him with compassion and doesn't humiliate or shame him. I was really rooting for him to succeed! Bai Yu isn't in the story much until the very end, so all the way through we get to ride the roller coaster of Zhu Yilong's life through the ups and downs of expertly over-complicating everything he touches. Chen Weidong and Yang Rong make appearances as their long-suffering friends watching from the sidelines (or ... are they only watching? Hmmm ...) I really enjoyed it. I think these brief but meaningful sentences sum up the mood and the author's tone perfectly: Why is life so hard?, Zhu Yilong is in the bargaining stage of grief and Friendship is overrated. Zhu Yilong only has enemies and love rivals now.

Why I'm Reccing This: There are four distinct characters in this story and the author does a beautiful job of keeping that clear throughout. Shen Wei is not Zhu Yilong or vice versa and Bai Yu is not Zhao Yunlan or vice versa - even though for plot-driven spoilery reasons they kind of are, in this setup. And yet throughout the narrative and even with switching between multiple alternating POVs, the author manages to write them all consistently & keep their individual quirks - both similarities and differences w/each other - carried onward with consummate skill, so that you never feel so much overlap that either counterpart becomes indistinct from the other. There is very little actual character bleed which is remarkable in a story that highlights the risk/benefit potentials of character bleed from the very start :)

Why I'm Reccing This: This story made me smile and sigh and tear up. It's a perfect depiction of Zhu Yilong: the careful, inoffensive persona he crafts for the surface, his awareness of what the fans like, how he works to avoid the minefields of interviews, and how he has to wear a mask... Except around Bai Yu. And the comfort and affection and camaraderie he has with Bai Yu is a source of temptation and uncertainty but also a source of relief and strength. Bai Yu, through Zhu Yilong's POV, is playful but protective, clearly there for him when Zhu Yilong is ready to take the next step. Their comfort around each other, their teasing banter, and most of all their love for each other are all here. I adore this story. (And I haven't even mentioned all the perfect details like the hot pot, the PUBG, the car scene!)

Why I'm Reccing This: This is a lovely ZhuBai fanvid that starts with behind-the-scenes footage from Guardian and moves on to the interviews, promotions, and the Harper's Bazaar ("wedding") photoshoot, building a progression to show their closeness and ease around each other. The editing works well with the music, and the use of effects is striking. Combined with the spare but beautiful instrumental music, the effects create a feeling of nostalgia, like watching faded home movies, but ultimately the vid is also a celebration of their friendship.

Why I'm Reccing This:
OH DEAR ME. This is going to require me to say sensible things, right? When all I want to do is point at Zhu Yilong's face and scream? To quote @kat_lair quoting HanHathma, he should repent, his face is an affront to god.

Okay, okay, fine. This is a gorgeous vid using Zhu Yilong's commercial and behind the scenes footage, set to lovely ethereal sensual music that fits him to a T, and including that amazing Time Engraver commercial. The mood is a little subdued and pastel/black&white until 0:36 where the beat kicks in, the color explodes gloriously, and the lyric is "I got your honey, baby" - well YES. Yes, I do believe you do.

I haven't really gone digging for Zhu Yilong footage yet, so almost all of these amazing clips are new to me, and man I feel like I need to post a warning about the sorbet eating at 2:18. At least I died happy?

The author follows canon history of Bai Yu and Zhu Yilong meeting to shoot Guardian and their progression through filming but with some added twists brought about by the fact that Zhu Yilong is a dragon and he takes that part of his life just as seriously as he does his acting when he's in human form. The author masterfully presents both Bai Yu and Zhu Yilong with their actor/celebrity personas we know and love perfectly intact. That's always a fine line to tread in RPF, and yet qikiqtarjuaq has a knack for capturing the finer points like their individually quirky senses of humor, Bai Yu's gently teasing ways, Zhu Yilong's affinity for social responsibility even in this magical world, and not least, their evolving mutual protectiveness and real affection for each other. These two celebrity personalities are recognizable, their voices comfortable and familiar. The fantasy elements are seamlessly blended into the plot and sweetly, creatively designed; qikiqtarjuaq's writing is full of sensory descriptions and details which add to the personality and flavor of this invented world. Some days you just want to curl up with a warm blanket, a hot drink and a fic that makes you feel equally warm inside, with two people falling for each other even in the face of real obstacles that might be enough to keep two lesser personalities apart - and a happy ending in sight. This is a perfect story for just such a day.
