sakana17: two house cats (merit-brush-recs-text-1)
[personal profile] sakana17
Welcome to Merit Brush Recs! We are a recommendations posting community for fanworks of all kinds (fic, vids, art, etc.) for 镇魂 | Guardian (both the novel and drama), related RPF, and other projects starring the lead actors, Bai Yu and Zhu Yilong. This includes commercials in which they play characters clearly separate from their own public personas.

Guidelines

Please read the guidelines before posting )

You don't have to rec anything. You are welcome to hang out and enjoy checking out other people's recommendations. But why not tell us about your favorite works in these beautiful fandoms, and spread the love?

Also, if you have any questions for the mods, please don't hesitate to reach out. Comments to this post are screened.

If you're near, it's quiet (13912 words) by A
Chapters: 10/10
Fandom: 镇魂 | Guardian (TV 2018) RPF
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Bai Yu/Zhu Yilong
Characters: Bai Yu (Actor), Zhu Yilong
Additional Tags: POV Alternating, Kneeling, Anxiety, Kissing, Pillow Talk, The Softest Exploration of Kink, Dom/sub, Orgasm Delay/Denial
Series: Part 1 of (a quiet place)
Summary:

"Stay," he says, and gently presses down until Zhu Yilong's forehead is resting on his shoulder. "Stay," he says again, quieter. There's still a tension to Zhu Yilong that he doesn't like. "Your body stays here," he murmurs close to his ear. "Your mind can go wherever."

- or, Bai Yu and Long-ge figure things out together. They also shoot a drama on the side.

Why I like this
This is fantastic. I love how warm and gentle and deep it is, like a riptide. Beautifully written, with wonderful characterization. I would recommend it to anyone who likes Guardian RPF. ♥

Relationships: Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan
Additional Tags: Fanart, Hurt/Comfort, Minor Injuries
Summary: Zhao Yunlan embraces Shen Wei as they sit on the floor together. His expression is pinched, while Shen Wei appears bashful—yet unrepentant—and covered in minor wounds that have been treated with a first aid kit.

Why I like this: I adore the sweet, domestic vibe in this, with the comfort part of hurt/comfort. Zhao Yunlan taking care of Shen Wei is one of my favorite things, and Shen Wei's chagrined yet pleased expression in this always makes me smile.

Endless Clarity of the Perfect Design (53760 words) by ShippersList
Chapters: 10/10
Fandom: 镇魂 | Guardian (TV 2018)
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan, Special Investigation Division | SID Ensemble & Zhao Yunlan
Characters: Zhao Yunlan, Shen Wei (Guardian), Special Investigation Division | SID Ensemble (Guardian), Zhao Xinci, Snake Tribe's Fourth Uncle (Guardian), Ya Qing (Guardian), Ying Chun (Guardian), Ye Zun (Guardian), other guardian characters
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Dystopia, Cyberpunk, cloak and dagger, Mindfuck, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder - PTSD, Flashbacks, Psychological Trauma, Zhao Xinci's A+ Parenting, Team as Family, NOTHING IS AS IT SEEMS, dreams and visions, Slow Burn, grey morals, Canon-Typical Violence, Ambiguous/Open Ending, (can be read as happy ending)
Summary: Zhao Yunlan has it all figured out. He’s the youngest Director of Standardized Information Deconstruction unit—SID for short—he has a dedicated, hardworking team (at least for the most part), and a handful of very good friends. True, he doesn’t have a social life outside his work, his relationship with his father is nonexistent, and all his friends just happen to be in his team but…that’s semantics. He’s happy. Ish.

And then the visions start pouring in.

Why I like this: It's been a long time since I read any cyberpunk, or hard SF at all, and this was a great way to reacquaint myself with the genre! It takes place in a dark (metaphorically, mostly) but vivid world that's gorgeously layered (in more than one way). A lot of the characters that don't normally appear in AUs are incorporated in small but crucial roles, and some in very surprising ways. The SW/ZYL relationship takes a back seat to what's going on in Zhao Yunlan's mind/life but it's still a driving force behind his motivations.[personal profile] shipperslist focuses on a hard SF style of storytelling without sacrificing any of the heart of the drama or its characters. If you're a hard SF fan, definitely give this a read!

Why I like this: It's gorgeous and incredibly sweet, and I'd recommend it as a mood booster.

Additional Tags: Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Presumed Dead, Not Really Character Death, set after Episode 23 (the one with the Kitchen Scene), Canon Divergence, Magical Exhaustion
Summary: Shen Wei faced the storm and let it break around him. In the center of catastrophe, he closed his eyes. He could hear no heartbeats, could feel no life around him other than his own.
Zhao Yunlan. Where are you?

Why I like this: A wonderful mix of emotional and physical h/c, with a gorgeous Shen Wei POV and a real mystery at the heart of the story.

Relationships: Shen Wei & Ye Zun (Guardian), Ye Zun & Zhao Yunlan, Shen Wei & Ye Zun & Zhao Yunlan, Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan
Characters: Ye Zun (Guardian), Shen Wei (Guardian), Zhao Yunlan, Special Investigation Division | SID Ensemble (Guardian)
Additional Tags: POV Third Person, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Microaggressions, Emails, Postcards, Text Messages, Image Descriptions, indirect expressions of love, mentions of incarceration, ye zun was not in a pillar, No Beta, relationships being healed, Character Study, mentions of OCs - Freeform
Summary:

When Ye Zun is finally released from his imprisonment in Dixing, he decides to make a new life in Haixing. It's away from the baggage of home that Ye Zun can heal his relationship with Shen Wei. Told entirely through third-person avenues such as emails, social media and documents.

Why I like this:

It's a very fun story about Ye Zun getting his life together and maybe helping Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan along the way, too. Featuring: chat messages, infuriating corporate emails, earnest emails from Shen Wei, less earnest but still very telling emails from Ye Zun, and app receipts. It's a clever blend of novel and drama, and you can have fun catching all the references.

Thank you to everyone for voting and commenting on the most recent polls! Based on the feedback we received, [personal profile] ranalore and I are revising the community guidelines. This is still underway but we hope to be finished very soon.

The guidelines, FAQ, and profile displaying now are the old ones until we finalize the new ones, but! Since one of the main changes we're making is allowing use of the AO3 "share" template, if you'd like to go ahead and rec some of the goodies from [community profile] sundial_exchange and Chocolate Box, please feel free. Simply add Why I like this where you can say something -- as brief or as detailed as you want -- about why you like the fanwork and want to rec it to others.

Another change is that the tagset has been greatly reduced! The only tags required now are for canon, type (e.g., fanart, fanvid, etc.), and ship (or character if the fanwork has no ship). All of the other tags have been removed, and I've done a little maintenance on the tags of existing posts by removing redundant character tags when there is a ship tag.

Reminder to vote in the follow-up polls about templates and tags here. Thank you to everyone who's voted and commented already! The polls close on 10 February (Pacific timezone).

This is follow-up to the earlier polls about modifying [community profile] merit_brush_recs. Thank you to everyone who voted in the polls and left comments! [personal profile] ranalore and I have reviewed all the feedback.

Time for more voting!

Templates:

We'll allow people to use AO3's "share" template. And if other sites generate a similar template that includes basic info (creator, title, link, etc.), that's also fine to use.

Some people indicated they never use the tags, others find some of the tags useful. [personal profile] ranalore and I agree that we don't need all of the existing tag categories, but we want to retain the ones people use.

In order for a recommendation post to have tags, the required information has to be somewhere in the post. For example, if there is a tag for canon (drama, novel, RPF, etc.), the canon the fanwork was created for needs to be in the post. The AO3 "share" template includes canon, but for fanworks on other sites, the poster may need to indicate the canon. This is true even if a mod tags the post: the tag can't be added if the information isn't in the recommendation post.

You can see the existing tag categories and tags here.

The polls will be open for voting through 10 February 2021. What time is that for me?

Next steps: The mods will revise and edit the community's guidelines based on the feedback we get from these polls (which I think will be the last ones we need for now), and we'll announce the results and changes.

There was excellent feedback with the first set of polls - thank you to everyone who commented! Some things raised in those comments aren't addressed here, but that doesn't mean they've been ignored. We agreed with most of the suggestions for making the community less confusing, and we'll be revising the guidelines accordingly. The template and the tags emerged as the two areas where we need your input - what do you need to make posting and finding recs easier than it is now.

If you have additional comments about the community in general -- not just about the templates and tags -- feel free to comment on this post! Or you can comment on the existing guidelines post (which hasn't been revised yet) where comments are screened.

The poll to determine the future of the community closes in 2 days. Thank you to everyone who's already voted and commented!

Next steps:
It will take me a few days to go through the results and all the valuable feedback that's been given, confer with co-mod [personal profile] ranalore, and draw up some proposed solutions.

There may be areas where there isn't one clear, implementable option that will make everyone happy. If that's the case, I will likely present the choices in a follow-up poll. (I will try to avoid poll fatigue, though!)

ETA: It's great to see criticisms and feedback in comments! Keep it coming! I won't be replying to the comments while the poll is open, to encourage open, free discussion and exchange of ideas. I'm keeping the poll open for 3 weeks another week so occasional users can have a chance to vote.

ETA 2:I've been holding back on replying to comments mostly because it's been useful and interesting to see the various points people have made, and (selfishly) I'm hoping for more. There seem to be some trends emerging, but before I start engaging on what & how to change things, I'd like to allow more space for other voices.

I'm not at all invested in keeping the status quo. I had some theories about what the barriers to posting were, but didn't want to make assumptions. I think it's a great sign that people have put so much thought into the feedback and critiques! It's exactly what I hoped would happen.

Characters/Ships: Shen Wei
Rating: General
Warnings: None
Themes: Character study
Collection: [community profile] drawesome's Drawtober 2020 challenge
Summary: Shen Wei asleep for ten thousand years.

Why I'm Reccing This: this piece is breathtakingly beautiful and complex: as a character study, the drawing internalizes shen wei's dream by placing it inside the outline of his body, under the "surface" upon which life seems to be going on while he is magically asleep. the dream itself appears to be composed of his memories and impressions that look like they're swirling through him thanks to the zentangle style of the artwork. there's a stylized image of the candy wrapper, design elements of the hallows turned into patterns that are sort of echoing through him, and these threads of his life woven through his subconscious create an exquisite contrast with his face - young, beautiful, relaxed in sleep. (his eyelashes, SIGH.)

there is also a wonderful contrast between the peace above ground and the lively intensity below. i love the gradient in the color of the sky that visually separates it so clearly from the magical dream under the surface. and yet, there is something rather dreamlike about life above ground as well: the vague silhouettes of trees, the temple which appears to be built upon his heart, and the figures of a couple standing together near it - they are too small to be identified, but they could be shen wei and zhao yunlan as our dreamer might have conjured them up. the proportions are surreal too: shen wei is not a slumbering giant upon whom the landscape shapes itself following the lines of his profile; but the very greatness of his love and loss, his thousands of years of loneliness (softened though they are by sleep) feel immense and elemental, closer to being a part of nature and earth's lifespan than to the range of a human life. also, his role in the relationship between the people of dixing and haixing, of underground and overground, is tremendous enough to make this portrait of him feel true. it's a heartbreaking moment in the story, but this artwork makes it feel layered and rich and comforting - full of hope, as his heart is full of love even while he sleeps. ♥

Summary: A day in the life of Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan, from waking up to SID to casework to going home.

Why I'm Reccing This: 噫!is my favorite Guardian fan artist, and I check her Lofter regularly - she has a lot of spectacular watercolor art, lots of lovely ZhuBai portraits too, but this long strip is just jawdropping.

She's telling a story of their daily life and it feels so intimate that we're almost intruding - we get to see Shen Wei wake up in bed and put on his glasses, Zhao Yunlan styling his hair and simultaneously brushing his teeth (which is so him that it makes me laugh). The outfits she puts them in when they get dressed are so gorgeous, sigh, and their facial expressions are so nuanced.

The rest of the SID are here too, and I particularly love Zhu Hong's bubblegum and Da Qing's little fishy strut. She packs so much into these images - the monster, the fight, CSZ and GCC in the background, the battle couple stride! - and then the soft, slow taxi drive home that ends on such a beguiling note, where I can't tear my eyes away from Shen Wei's delicate pocket chain.

Category: M/M
Length/Size: 3494 words
Characters/Ships: Lian Chengbi/Pei Wende
Rating: Teen and up
Warnings: No warnings apply
Themes: getting together, fluff, sharing a bed, traveling together, pining, hot springs
Author's summary: A young martial artist with high aspirations and a stoic and grumpy swordsman are traveling together.

Why I'm Reccing This:
A rare pairing! (In English, anyway...) This is a sweet getting together story for Lian Chengbi (Zhu Yilong's character from Shaw Eleven Lang) and Pei Wende (Bai Yu's character from Fa Hai). I like the premise that they are traveling companions fighting side by side in the Jiang-Hu martial arts world. An inn with a hot springs bath is a perfect setting, and sets up one of my favorite tropes: there is only one bed. Lian Chengbi here is reminiscent of the character in the earlier part of Shaw Eleven Lang: polite and hesitant to express his desires. Pei Wende's gruffness seems to hide a softer core, and makes a nice counterpoint. A good, fluffy read.
